Contributory Aged Parent visa (Subclass 884)

Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 884 is a temporary visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow your parents to stay in Australia for 2 years. The visa period starts on the date the visa is granted.

Contributory Aged Parent visa (Subclass 884)

Contributory Aged Parent Visa Subclass 884 is a temporary visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow your parents to stay in Australia for 2 years. The visa period starts on the date the visa is granted.

Applying for the subclass 884 visa and then the subclass 864 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years

  • You must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply and when the department decide on your application. Any family members who apply for the visa with you must also be in Australia, when you apply. If you apply for this visa in Australia while on a temporary visa with a no further stay condition, your application will be invalid, unless you apply for a waiver of this condition.
  • You must be sponsored by an eligible and approved sponsor. Usually you would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation.
  • Your visa application is assessed in 2 stages.
  • Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
  • Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision. Don’t arrange to move to Australia until the visa is granted.
  • Not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa
  • You must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia.
  • Must not have a no further stay condition. The visa you currently hold must not have a no further stay condition on it.
  • Meet the balance of family test. You meet this test if at least half of your children and step children are eligible children, or there are more eligible children than children living in any other single country.
  • You might not be granted this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. 
  • The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.
  • Best interests of the child. The visa might not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

Contributory Aged Parent visa (Subclass 864)

Contributory Aged Parent visa subclass 864 is a permanent visa that allow the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia; stay in Australia indefinitely.

 If you hold a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa subclass 884: You can apply for the subclass 864 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (subclass 884) visa. Applying for the subclass 884 visa and then the subclass 864 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

Contributory Aged Parent visa (Subclass 864)

Contributory Aged Parent visa subclass 864 is a permanent visa that allow the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia; stay in Australia indefinitely.

 If you hold a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) visa subclass 884: You can apply for the subclass 864 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Aged Parent (Temporary) (subclass 884) visa. Applying for the subclass 884 visa and then the subclass 864 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

  • You must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply and when the department decide on your application. Any family members who apply for the visa with you must also be in Australia, when you apply.
  • You must be sponsored by an eligible and approved sponsor. Usually you would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation. If your sponsor dies. If you hold a Temporary Contributory Aged Parent (subclass 884) visa, you might still be eligible for this visa.
  • visa application is assessed in 2 stages.
  • Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
  • Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision. Don’t arrange to move to Australia until the visa is granted.
  • You must be old enough to receive the age pension in Australia. The pension age will be gradually increased from 66 to 67 from July 2019 till July 2023.
  • You must meet the balance of family test. You meet the balance of family test if at least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or there are more eligible children living in Australia than in any other single country
  • You must be able to obtain an assurance of support. An assurance of support will assure that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa. The assurance is for you and any family members who come to Australia with you on this visa. We will let you know when you need to provide the assurance of support.
  • Not have had a visa cancelled or a previous application refused. You might not be granted this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. 
  • The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.
  • Best interests of the child. The visa might not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

This is because the initial application fee is $3,770 for the first applicant and $1,880 for any additional applicant. However, the second instalment for each applicant is $43,600. This visa takes approximately 1.5 to 2 years to process and is a permanent visa from approval.

The large “Contribution” of money that is called for upon the second instalment is in order to offset the rights that are awarded to the visa holder under permanent residency such as health care that they have not contributed towards throughout their lives as ordinary Australians have throughout their life by way of tax.

Contributory Parent visa subclass 173 (Temporary)

Contributory Parent visa subclass 173 is a temporary visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow your parents to stay in Australia for 2 years. The visa period starts on the date you enter Australia after you are granted the visa.

Apply for a Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa: You can spread the cost of the permanent visa over a number of years by applying in 2 steps: first, apply for the temporary Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa, then apply for the permanent Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa.

Contributory Parent visa subclass 173 (Temporary)

Contributory Parent visa subclass 173 is a temporary visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow your parents to stay in Australia for 2 years. The visa period starts on the date you enter Australia after you are granted the visa.

Apply for a Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa: You can spread the cost of the permanent visa over a number of years by applying in 2 steps: first, apply for the temporary Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa, then apply for the permanent Contributory Parent (subclass 143) visa.

  • You can be inside or outside Australia when you apply for the visa; but you must be outside Australia when the department decide on your application. Any family members who apply for the visa with you must also be in Australia, when you apply. If you apply for this visa in Australia while on a temporary visa with a no further stay condition, your application will be invalid, unless you apply for a waiver of this condition.

Contributory Parent visa subclass 143 (permanent)

Contributory Parent visa subclass 143 is a permanent visa that allow the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia; stay in Australia indefinitely.

If you hold a Contributory Parent Temporary (subclass 173) visa: You can apply for the subclass 143 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa. Applying for the subclass 173 visa and then the subclass 143 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

Contributory Parent visa subclass 143 (permanent)

Contributory Parent visa subclass 143 is a permanent visa that allow the parent or parents of a child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia; stay in Australia indefinitely.

If you hold a Contributory Parent Temporary (subclass 173) visa: You can apply for the subclass 143 visa as a two-step process by first applying for a Contributory Parent (Temporary) (subclass 173) visa. Applying for the subclass 173 visa and then the subclass 143 visa allows you to spread the cost of the visas over a number of years.

  • You can be inside or outside Australia when you apply for the visa.
  • If you apply in Australia, any family members who apply with you must also be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply. If you apply outside Australia, any family members who apply for the visa with you must also be outside Australia when you apply. You can be inside or outside Australia when the department decide on your application.
  • You must be outside Australia when the department decide on your application, unless you hold or held a Contributory Parent (Temporary) visa (subclass 173) or substituted Visitor visa (subclass 600) before lodging your application.
  • Visa application is assessed in 2 stages: Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it. And, continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision. Don’t arrange to move to Australia until the visa is granted.
  • Not have a Sponsored Parent Temporary visa subclass 870
  • You must be sponsored by an eligible and approved sponsor. Usually you would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation. If you hold a Temporary Contributory Parent (subclass 173) visa, you might still be eligible for this visa if your sponsor dies.
  • You must meet the balance of family test. You meet the balance of family test if: at least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or there are more eligible children living in Australia than in any other single country. If you apply for this visa as a retireeyou don’t need to meet the balance of family test.
  • You must be able to obtain an assurance of support. An assurance of support will assure that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa. The assurance is for you and any family members who come to Australia with you on this visa. We will let you know when you need to provide the assurance of support. You must be able to obtain an assurance of support, unless you apply for the visa as a retiree.
  • Have health insurance. If you apply for this visa as a retiree, you must maintain adequate health insurance until you are granted a Parent visa. Your insurance should cover you for medically necessary treatment, including transport.
  • The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.
  • Best interests of the child. The visa might not be granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

You can apply for a Parent visa subclass 143 as a retiree if:

  • on 8 May 2018, you held or had previously held an Investor Retirement (subclass 405) visa or Retirement (subclass 410), and
  • you have not held any other substantive visa between 8 May 2018 and the date you applied for the Parent visa

If you apply for this visa as a retiree:

  • you must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply.
  • you don’t need to meet the balance of family test
  • you don’t need to have an assurance of support
  • you don’t need a sponsor
  • can include your partner when you apply provided they are also a retiree
  • you can’t include your children in your application.

Sponsored Parent visa subclass 870 (Temporary)

Sponsored Parent visa subclass 870 is a temporary visa that allow a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa.

This visa provides parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia, while ensuring that taxpayers are not required to cover additional costs. The visa responds to community concerns about the limited number of Parent places in the migration program and associated lengthy waiting periods.

Sponsored Parent visa subclass 870 (Temporary)

Sponsored Parent visa subclass 870 is a temporary visa that allow a parent of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen, visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years per visa.

This visa provides parents with a new pathway to temporarily reunite with their children and grandchildren in Australia, while ensuring that taxpayers are not required to cover additional costs. The visa responds to community concerns about the limited number of Parent places in the migration program and associated lengthy waiting periods.

  • You must have an approved Parent Sponsor to apply for this visa. Your sponsor’s household is limited to one sponsorship at a time. Your sponsor’s sponsorship can cover up to 2 parents per household at a time.
  • Sponsors will need to have a taxable income of at least$83,454.80. a minimum household income threshold (based on the income of the sponsor, or the combined income of the sponsor and their spouse/partner and/or another child of the parent)
  • To be eligible to apply, you must: be the biological, legal (including adoptive) parent, step-parent or parent in-law of the Parent Sponsor and be at least 18 years of age.
  • You must be outside Australia when you apply for this visa, unless you have Permission to Apply in Australia, but not in immigration clearance. You can be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when we decide your application.
  • Permission to Apply in Australia allows you to apply for this visa in Australia, but not in immigration clearance. It must be requested by your sponsor in their sponsorship application form. If you have Permission to Apply in Australia, you must lodge your visa application within 60 days of sponsorship approval. If you do not apply within 60 days, you will have to lodge your visa application outside Australia within 6 months of sponsorship approval, or make an application for a different kind of visa to remain in Australia. If you do not have Permission to Apply in Australia, you must apply from outside Australia within 6 months of sponsorship approval or make an application for and be granted a different kind of visa to remain in Australia.
  • Have enough money. You must have, or have access to, enough money to support yourself while you are in Australia.
  • Have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily. You must intend to: stay only temporarily in Australia and do only the things the visa allows you to do. If you have already lodged a permanent parent visa application, you may visit Australia, but not remain in Australia permanently while the application is being decided. This is a temporary visa only. You will not have the right to permanent residence. You cannot apply for a permanent parent visa when you have this visa.
  • You must have and maintain adequate arrangements for health insurance from an Australian Health Insurance provider to cover any unforeseen medical treatment you might need while you are in Australia.
  • The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.
  • You can travel to and from Australia as many times as you want while the visa is valid.
  • You cannot stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. You must apply for another visa.
  • This visa does not lead to permanent residence.
  • You cannot apply for a permanent parent visa when you have this visa.
  • You cannot work in Australia while you hold this visa.
  • You cannot include family members in your visa application.
  • You can apply to stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years at a time.
  • You can stay for the period or date(s) specified on the visa grant letter.
  • You might not be granted the length of stay you want. Your visa will end:
  • on the date specified on the visa grant letter
  • if it is cancelled by the migration department
  • if your sponsorship is withdrawn and you do not find a new Parent Sponsor
  • if the migration department cancel the sponsorship

You can stay for a cumulative maximum 10 year period.

You must be outside Australia for at least 90 days before being eligible to be granted another Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa, unless you have Permission to Apply in Australia.

If you have held Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visas for the cumulative maximum 10 year period, you must either depart Australia or apply for another kind of visa that will allow you to remain in Australia. You will not be eligible for grant of a further Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa.

AGED PARENT VISA (SUBCLASS 804)​

The Australian Aged Parent visa allows older parents who are already on temporary visas to live in Australia permanently if their child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

There is currently a long queue in processing this particular visa where waiting times of up to 13 years before this visa is approved. Eligible aged parents may want to apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa, however that visa will incur a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support bond as well.

AGED PARENT VISA (SUBCLASS 804)​

The Australian Aged Parent visa allows older parents who are already on temporary visas to live in Australia permanently if their child is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia.

There is currently a long queue in processing this particular visa where waiting times of up to 13 years before this visa is approved. Eligible aged parents may want to apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa, however that visa will incur a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support bond as well.

If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation.

The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.

Parent visa (subclass 103)

Parent visa subclass 103 is a permanent visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child/step-child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow parents to permanently migrate to Australia and reunite with their children.

There is currently a long queue in processing this particular visa where waiting times of up to 30 years before this visa is approved. Eligible aged parents may want to apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa, however that visa will incur a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support bond as well.

Parent visa (subclass 103)

Parent visa subclass 103 is a permanent visa suitable for the parent or parents of a child/step-child who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen who is settled in Australia. If granted, this visa will allow parents to permanently migrate to Australia and reunite with their children.

There is currently a long queue in processing this particular visa where waiting times of up to 30 years before this visa is approved. Eligible aged parents may want to apply for the Contributory Aged Parent visa, however that visa will incur a larger application fee and an Assurance of Support bond as well.

  • You and any family members who apply with you can be in or outside Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when applying for the visa. But you must be outside Australia when the migration department decide on your application. If you are applying as a retiree you must be in Australia, but not in immigration clearance, when you apply and you can be in or outside Australia when the migration department decide on your application.
  • The assessment of this visa application is done in 2 stages.
  • Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
  • Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision. Don’t arrange to move to Australia until your visa is granted. We will let you know in writing your visa is granted.
  • Not have a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa.
  • You must be sponsored by an eligible sponsor. Usually you would be sponsored by an eligible child. If your child is under 18, you can be sponsored by an eligible relative or community organisation. The sponsorship must be approved.
  • You must meet the balance-of-family test. You meet the balance of family test if at least half of your children and step-children are eligible children, or there are more eligible children living in Australia than in any other single country.
  • You must be able to obtain an assurance of support. An assurance of support assures us that you will not have to rely on government assistance after you enter Australia on this visa. The assurance is for you and any family members who come to Australia with you on this visa. We will let you know when you need to provide the assurance of support.
  • Have health insurance. You are personally liable for all your healthcare costs while you are in Australia. Medical insurance helps limit your financial liability.
  • You might not be eligible for this visa if you have had a visa cancelled or refused while you were in Australia. 
  • The Applicant parent and any family members applying for the visa must meet immigration health and character requirements.
  • Best interests of the child. The visa may be not granted if it is not in the best interests of an applicant under 18.

You can apply for this visa if on 8 May 2018, you held or had previously held an Investor Retirement (subclass 405) visa or Retirement (subclass 410), and you have not held any other substantive visa between 8 May 2018 and the date you applied for the Parent visa

If you apply for this visa as a retiree:

  • you don’t need to meet the balance of family test
  • you don’t need to have an assurance of support
  • you don’t need a sponsor
  • you must maintain adequate health insurance until you are granted a Parent visa.
  • can include your partner when you apply provided they are also retired
  • can’t include your children in your application

Other parent visas might be processed more quickly:

  • The Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143) is a permanent visa. Contributory Parent visas are processed faster, but they cost more.
  • You need to apply first for the Contributory Parent (temporary) visa (subclass 173), then a permanent Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143). This 2-step visa process is faster but costs more than the subclass 103 visa. It also costs more than applying directly for the Contributory Parent visa (subclass 143), but the cost is spread across the 2 visas over a longer period
